Kankana Banerjee inherited a keen sense of music from her very childhood and had early lessons of Classical Hindustani Music from her mother who was a disciple of Late Tarapada Chakraborty of Kolkata and Late Pt. Ratanjankar of Lucknow.
In 1955, at just nine years old, she was discovered by the legendary maestro Ustad Amir Khan. Under his tutelage she mastered the intricate, slow-tempo improvisations distinct to the Indore style. After Khan saheb’s untimely demise, Kankana continued to hone her art under the tutelage of Pt Pratap Narayan of the Mewati gharana. Her gayaki combines the depth and rigor of Ustad Amir Khan’s style with the sweetness and dynamism of Pratap Narayan’s. She has performed extensively both in India and abroad, and has won several prestigious accolades throughout her career.
